On the 24th of October, Summerhall was taken over for the Cancer Research Ceilidh Experiment, with over 200 people coming along.
Over September and October, the Science Ceilidh has been working with local researchers from the Edinburgh Cancer Research Centre and the IGMM adapting new dances based on the cutting-edge research and biology underlying cancer: from location-activated drugs using palladium (The "Palladium Reel", with Thomas Bray), to looking at the roles of antioxidants ("The Flying Antioxidant", with Anna-Maria Maciejuk) and protein-based biomarkers ("Circassian Biomarker Circle", with Sarah Thomas).
As well as ceilidh, there was plenty else going on. From fair-ground games & sweets, short films, spoken word with Cancer Out Loud, art, 1950's themed rooms & researchers, crafts & cards, a roman centurion, nurses armed with people half-baring it all, games which may help cancer research, and three licensed bars, plenty of glowsticks and delicious crepes from Tupiniquim Brasil Crepes which kept everyone going!
The photos of the event are above, or available here, and the video footage is on it's way, along with more detailed filmed of some of the new dances we have.
Our evaluation was very positive, with an average rating of 4.6/5.0 for how enjoyable the event was and attracting audiences who had not been to many Cancer Research UK events before and now felt more informed about the incredible progress and research going on locally!
