Introducing the world's first long-term Curated Scientist-in-Residence Programme in a shopping center, Ocean Terminal in Leith, Scotland.
Featuring free science and art activities, Informal discussions over tea and biscuits at the Living Memory Association with local Scientists, a hacked Lab Unit in the middle of the mall for hands-on experiments and roaming Scientists Busking with science tricks once a month. Since July 2016, we have ran over 24 events and had a chat with over 8000 shoppers in Leith.
In between our events, the unit serves as a Leith Community Science Postbox, including an exhibition, science news and postcards for shoppers to post their questions about science. We have received over 400 questions we are now working through and teaming Leith-ers with scientists to answer the questions themselves. If you have a question about science you've always wondered about, send us a message, #LeithLabs tweet, post on our facebook page or just come along in person and we'll do our best to point you in the right direction, put you in touch with local scientists directly or theme a Leith Lab exploring your ideas.
We are currently taking a break in January and February 2018, but our next Leith Labs event will be the 11th of March as part of British Science Week!
Leith Labs has been kindly funded by the Physiological Society and the EU Researchers Night, with in-kind support from Ocean Terminal, Science Ceilidh, Fun Palaces and Eureka Edinburgh. Photos: Chris Scott.
